Introduction to Studio Photography

I’ve been working towards this for a while now and I’m very pleased to announce that I’ll soon be providing a studio photography course programme. They’ll be held at my Surrey studio and will be aimed at amateur and enthusiast photographers alike. The courses will start out very simple at first and I’ll be adding more advanced techniques as time goes by.

More information about the first course after the jump…

What’s in the bag? Packing for a shoot is more than gear in a bag

Back in the studio tomorrow for an all day shoot. To be honest, I should really be prepping and packing rather than writing this but I thought it might be good to explain what I take and why.

I’m a great believer in packing for the occasion, in this case the studio, but it needs a little thought and planning. You need to take the right stuff and if you’re not careful you’ll end up taking far too much. Even worse, you may end up not taking something essential.

Gavin in Action in the Studio

I don’t very often get a behind the scenes shot of me in action so I was extremely grateful to Debbie for snapping this shot (left) of me a few days ago when I shot DJ Ande Dilema for the cover of her new CD. The shot to the right is what I took with the camera at roughly the same time.

I find I’ve been doing a lot of studio work recently and its great to be out of the cold weather and really good fun too. Have to say, you can’t beat working in a professional fashion studio like this. The versatility of the white cove is amazing and with a little bit of thought and planning it can be taken from pure white (as above) down to almost black.

The best part though is that having made some great contacts in the industry I am now able to extend my range of services to include studio sessions. Virtually everything from model experience days to model/session stylist portfolio work to fashion and look books to bands and CD covers. More info about this coming soon to my main site, http://gavinthorn.com

Advanced Lighting with Adam Duckworth

I met Adam Duckworth back in April 2009 when I took his course on Advanced Lighting Techniques, courtesy of theFlashCentre.

Advanced studio lightingTo be brutally honest, I was really nervous when I booked myself on the course, having virtually no studio lighting experience to speak of other than a day’s studio macro course and fiddling with my own studio lights. I have to say though that Adam was really great to spend the day with. I learned so much from that single event. Much, much more than I could have hoped for. I can certainly see why he has been awarded Editorial Photographer of the Year.Advanced studio lighting

It wasn’t just Adam either.

We had a great model for the day, the lovely Leah, and I learned nearly as much from her as I did from Adam himself. Between then they made a great team. The whole day was very relaxed and informal and totally charged with positive energy. I think I floated all the way home down the M6.

Adam and Leah between them were very instrumental in me deciding upon a career change and indeed the birth of this very blog.
