I don’t very often get a behind the scenes shot of me in action so I was extremely grateful to Debbie for snapping this shot (left) of me a few days ago when I shot DJ Ande Dilema for the cover of her new CD. The shot to the right is what I took with the camera at roughly the same time.

I find I’ve been doing a lot of studio work recently and its great to be out of the cold weather and really good fun too. Have to say, you can’t beat working in a professional fashion studio like this. The versatility of the white cove is amazing and with a little bit of thought and planning it can be taken from pure white (as above) down to almost black.

The best part though is that having made some great contacts in the industry I am now able to extend my range of services to include studio sessions. Virtually everything from model experience days to model/session stylist portfolio work to fashion and look books to bands and CD covers. The Drones, Band Promo Artwork

The Drones

It’s always great to see the final image at work. None more so than this one which I shot for the Drones towards the end of last year. Very cold day, just before that huge dump of snow we had. We were fortunate enough to be working inside for this one. Thankfully.

The band did a great job of turning the original image into this poster. If you’ve not come across them before, it’s well worth checking them out here: http://www.myspace.com/dronesuk

This was another outing for Big Mamma (aka the Westcott Apollo 50″ softbox). Did a great job of lighting the interior of the building too. Absolutely cannot get enough of this modifier. More shots from this shoot here: https://theLightMatters.com/?p=906

Gavin Thorn LSWPP :-)

Contact Sheet

Very fortunate today to receive a lovely email from the SWPP informing me that my recent submission was sufficient for me to be given my Licentiate.

What does this mean? Quite simply, I can now put LSWPP after my name and now work towards becoming an associate member. The images will also be published in a future edition of Professional Image Maker.

The Drones…

The Drones
The Drones

Had the pleasure of working with The Drones a couple of weeks ago in a really cool location. As it turns out, they wanted a set of images with a distressed look and one of the band members had access to an old outbuilding that was being done up.

I’ve wanted to work I this typeof location for a while now, particularly for a model shoot, as it has the potential to offer up some amazing images. When The Drones emailed me and suggested we use this building, I jumped at the chance. There was an added bonus too. When we made these images, it was about -3degC outside so having some shelter from the elements was very welcome.

This old building was amazing. It was in a sorry state of repair. Peeling plaster. Rubbish on the floor. Dark. Dingy. Perfect. I had total control of the light in there. It also had three/four rooms we could use too. Just the ticket for an afternoon’s photo-shoot with a cool group.

So we set to work, cue Big Mamma. I don’t get to use this light on location much owing to it’s size. 50″x50″ has a huge tendency to catch the wind and blow over which would be an expensive mistake. To be fair, in this location it may have been too big, but the quality of the light is amazing so worth a go… (see image below) Continue reading The Drones… »
