Day 2 has been even better than day 1 was yesterday. Great shoot this afternoon with two fantastic models and a bounty of amazing images too. Can’t complain.
We were shooting at Hebdon House which is a really spectacular venue. Apart from the last few that were taken outside, all the shots were taken inside in some really lovely, soft, natural daylight. One thing I have definitely learned over the last two days is simply that it is possible to work in low light without resorting to pulling the flash or studio lights out of the kit bag. That said, we were fortunate to have a sunny day with blue skies. Had it been raining outside it would have been a whole different story. Even shooting wide open at f2.8 at a high ISO may not be enough to cut it. That is definitely one to try on another day.
For me, the afternoon was summed up nicely by a short conversation I had with the tutor…
D: “How are you getting on?”
Me: “Pretty good. I’ve got some great images. They’re definitely ones that Aunty Mabel won’t be able to get.“
D: “Lets have a look…”
Me: [Shows images on camera]
D: “Most pro’s won’t even be able to get shots like those, mate.”
He definitely pushed me beyond where I thought I could get to.
Here is a small selection of shots. As yesterday, they’re all natural, available light and definitely no flash. All the images in this post were made using a 5DmkII and the trusty EF 70-200 f2.8L IS apart from the wide shot which I took on my 20D and EF 16-35 f2.8L. They were all shot wide open and at ISO 1600 on the 5D, ISO800 on the 20D.
So now its on to day 3 of the seminar. It’s going to be a day in the studio looking at post-processing techniques and workflow. aka how to make great images even better.
