…actually, small confession, the journey began a few months ago but it wasn’t until recently that I had the idea of blogging about my plans.
So, what on earth am I talking about? And why Blog about it???
Well, I’m looking to make a lifestyle change. I’m preparing the ground now with a view to giving up on the day job change direction to become a professional photographer. Will I achieve this? To be honest, I don’t know but I’m very determined to succeed and so far I’ve made a lot of progress. I’ve come a long way, but not nearly far enough yet
The purpose of this Blog is to plan and document the journey from this point onwards. I want to use it as a medium to consolidate my thoughts and plan each stage until I reach my goal.
Interestingly enough, when I first had the idea of this Blog, I had anticipated it to have a heavy bias towards photography. After all, that is ultimately what I plan to do for a living. My latest thinking is that this will likely turn out to be a journey into marketing. I’m confident about my abilities with a camera. I can drive Lightroom and Photoshop to achieve the image I’m looking for. I can pose a model or client and work with them to put them at ease to get the very best from them. I can work in the studio or on location and control/modify the light in order to make the image I want and that fulfills the brief from the client.
So, where do I need to improve?
My primary concern for now is marketing. To have a business, I need to build the business and that means clients. Real clients. Ones that will pay me to make a good image of them and then buy the prints to display in their homes or give to their friends and families.
I’ve been putting a lot of effort into this aspect recently and have found it to be very illuminating. So much so that I’m in the process of tweaking my websites to make them more appealing to prospective clients. I’m also planning to add some links to other resources on the Web to the Blog so anyone else on a journey similar to mine will also be able to benefit.
Closing thoughts…
I fully anticipate this Blog to change and evolve over time. The content, theme and shape of my posts will very likely adapt to the stage of the journey that I’m on at the time of writing. For me at least, this will just add to the diversity of the Blog and I hope that this is the same for you also.
