I was inspired to write this post by this very image. You may not notice it but it has been cropped to meet the requirements of a double page spread for a magazine article. Before you ask, not its not going to be published but it will feature in my book. Most likely as one of the leading images. And that is what inspired me to write this. The very fact that I printed this image as two pages of a 14″x11″ album and I was absolutely blown away by th quality of the finished product.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve printed out images before. Some as large as 30″x20″ in fact. But these are normally handed over to the client wiht minimal handling on my part in case they get damaged or soiled. The difference here is that these were my images, printed for me to go into my book as examples of my work. That simple fact is the entire point of this post:
How often do we, as digital photographers, print out images? Especially of this size?
I suspect the answer is probably very rarely. The tendency nowadays is to view them on a vdu but there is definitely something lacking there. Yes, we can pixel peep and gloat about how sharp the eyes are when zoomed to 100% but that is nothing compared to having a tangible print in one’s hands. I’ll ask the question again – are we in fact in danger of missing the point of our photography or is it simply the case that we’re moving to a new chapter in imaging where we no longer need or indeed want printed media?
