I thought I’d try something a bit different for this post for a bit of fun and to try and stimulate some more engagement on theLightMatters Blog, so I have a little quiz for you.

Have a look at the two photos on this post and see if you can work out how they were lit.

(Hint: They were both made with the same lighting set-up.)

This is a really great skill to develop. Looking at photos and working out how the photographer lit them is a fantastic way to pick up new lighting tips and techniques. There are always clues and tell tale signs. You just need to look for them and find them.

Take these two photos of Kerry for instance. Look for the shadows, the shadow transitions and the catchlights. They may be hard to spot but they’re there nevertheless. You should then be able to work out…

a) how many lights were used

b) where they were

c) what modifiers were used (if any)

When you have your answers, leave them in a comment below. Kudos to the first person who works it out correctly.

I’ll email the answer to everyone on my VIP list by the end of the month.

If this type of post proves popular I’ll make this a regular feature from now on.

Speak soon,
Gavin

BTW – don’t forget, leave a comment below with your answer as to how these shots were lit. Also, if you want to find out the answer type your name and email into the box below to join my VIP member list. It’s completely free and you can remove yourself at any time.
