The funny thing about headshot photography…

Headshot Photography -- the business case

Headshot Photography – the business case explained

There’s no denying it – headshots are a great source of revenue.

Actors need them…
Models need them…
Business owners need them…

They’re really high margin too. In most cases the client receives digital images so there’s very little outlay other than the cost of the shoot and the time to do the job.

Headshots are really easy too. With a little practice you can build a pure white studio setup in about 15 minutes. Allow 5 minutes to photograph the client and 10 minutes to pack everything away again and you’re on your way to your next appointment in little over half an hour.

Headshot photography it would seem has the potential to be extremely lucrative.

The Passing of theLightMatters…

Bournemouth Beach - 15mm Fisheye Lens

theLightMatters is now 6 years old. It’s been a friendly companion over the years; a fellow journeyman constantly by my side accompanying me on my quest, as hair brained as it seemed all those years ago. It’s been with me through good times and bad, the laughter and the tears.

As I look back it’s incredible how much I’ve learned in 6 short years. I’ve changed too, transitioning from a stressed out software engineer to running an award winning photography business. I’ve discovered a new passion too: marketing.

One of the biggest lessons I learned as a new business owner was “it doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do, its how you are at marketing that matters.”

I was really skeptical at first. Didn’t believe it for one minute. My pictures would speak for themselves. All I needed was a website with a gallery and tweet a few images from time to time.

When I first started along this journey a few years ago I spent wasted a lot of money (to the tune of £k’s) in advertising. It was money I couldn’t really afford to spend yet I persevered on the blind assumption that bookings would follow. How wrong could I have been? I landed one job as the result of a Google search and all the paid advertising got me absolutely nothing.

Where is the best place to advertise?

This is going to sound flippant but the best place to advertise is Continue reading Professional Photography – Where to advertise? »

Unveiling the new theLightMatters logo design

Best photographer in Guildford

The more observant amongst you will have noticed a new addition to theLightMatters blog, up there in the top left corner of the page, my new logo. It’s only taken me 4 years to design it and with the redesign of the site, it’s a necessary element to include.

When embarking on this new design I wanted to avoid all the cliché photography logos – those with cameras, bits of cameras, negatives etc. I wanted something that was much more akin to the fundamentals of photography. I wanted something to highlight what I perceive to be the most important aspect of photography: light and shadow. That’s what I wanted my logo to be about and hopefully I’ve achieved it.

Very early on in my photography training I realised how important the control and manipulation of light was to the success of an image. Continue reading Unveiling the new theLightMatters logo design »
